Diablo III Release Date Announced
Movie Reviews: Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Loving, Disobedience, Every Day
Avengers: Infinity War: Whoopee, another Marvel movie comes to save humanity from other more important things that they could be doing.
Thanos is some Big Guy who is collecting the "infinity stones" in order to wipe out half the population of the universe, because they are overpopulating (I'm not sure why, if he can reshape the universe, he doesn't just plan to double the size of the universe, but apparently imagination and power don't always go together). Everyone else, except his unexplained minions, try to stop him.
Within the context of Marvel movies - in other words, if you like Marvel movies - this is a great Marvel movie. While ten thousand main characters stretch the continuity and focus of the film for too much of the time, especially the first, oh, nine tenths - and while you pretty much have to have seen most of the other movies and have read some of the comics to know what the hell is going on, following the plot is never the point of a Marvel movie. Neither is attaining insight, being captivated by character or emotion, or getting inspired or informed. Marvel movies are about snarky humor, cool effects and battle sequences, nonsense uninvolving conflicts, and wish fulfilling superpowers.
Somehow the whole thing mostly holds together. Some of the main characters don't act exactly as they used to, powers and characters, as usual, are conveniently forgotten except when they are needed for a special effect (um ... God of Thunder? If Dr Strange can chop things off with his portal, why not chop off Thanos' hand or continually send him to some other place in the universe?), but the movie occasionally takes you in some directions that you were not expecting. Everyone acts well enough. And there were lots of cool battles and superpowers. So ... cool?
There were some weird problems, other than forgotten powers and characters. Why does no one seem to live in Scotland? How does that new eye work? If these stones were "spread out around the universe", it seems rather convenient that all of them were in our galaxy, and several of them were close to or on Earth.
This movie had a number of scenes involving people having to decide whether to sacrifice themselves or others for the greater good; the potential positive effect of this was ruined by the fact that this "greater good" was "saving half the people in the universe from dying", so the choice was really not much of a choice. Still, it was slightly interesting how some people couldn't make the choice to sacrifice others, while some people could. Maybe I could think about that for a while and learn something.
Within the context of all movies, this movie occupies the same space as nearly all the rest of the Marvel films: inconsequential, untransforming entertainment. You watch them to keep up to speed with a trendy cultural conversation. While I admit that the universe Marvel has created is somewhat rich, and likely to have a lasting effect on the cultural consciousness of this generation, I don't think any of the movies will ever be studied in school outside of a special effects course. There is nothing interesting about any character relations, choices, symbols, or plots in these movies. All you can do is recount the battles, jokes, and powers, and say "cool".
Solo: A Star Wars Story: I expected that this would be the movie in which Star Wars went off the deep end, but, sadly, that already happened with The Last Jedi. Rogue One showed us that the SW formula could be changed and still make a pretty good movie, while The Last Jedi showed us that, no, it really could not. Solo, therefore, was a surprise to me, since it was better than I was expecting.
The story is Solo and a gal named Qi'ra who are born into a poor world and have to commit crimes to survive. They get separated, and Solo finds himself in the army, then in a caper heist, and then in another one. Meanwhile, Qi'ra meets him somewhere between heists and might now be playing for the wrong side. A rag-tag band of scoundrels appear on various different sides of various different conflicts. Cue the betrayals, sleight-of-hands, and counter-betrayals.
Reviewers have not been kind, calling it derivative for not giving us more to Solo's character than we already knew from the other movies. Honestly, I liked that. This was what we saw in Rogue One, and Revenge of the Sith, for that matter.
Other reviewers said the story wasn't particularly interesting. Admittedly, the action sequences were rushed and generic, too much like Marvel movies. On the other hand, the Kessel sequence, which takes up about half of the movie, felt really, really Star Wars, and therefore really, really good. Kudos for that part of the film. Alden Ehrenreich was sometimes so-so as Solo, but occasionally he nailed it. Donald Glover was fantastic as Lando. Emilia Clark was decent as "the woman person in the plot". Woody Harrelson was okay as chief scoundrel, but distracting, since he always acts like Woody Harrelson.
It lacks a light saber battle, which is one of the best things about SW movies. And it lacks the plot development, ease of pace, and mysticism that made the six main SW movies so expansive. But it is competent and enjoyable, it fits into the story, and it sets up a sequel.
Loving: A quiet, moving film about the legal decision to forbid any laws that restrict marriage based on race. The case was Loving vs Virginia. The aptly named Richard Loving (played by Joel Edgerton, who is white) and Mildred Loving (played by Ruth Negga, who is black) got married in DC in the 1960s, but their home state of Virginia refused to recognize the marriage and said it was illegal to live together. They were thrown in jail, briefly, and then out of the state on pain of more jail. After too much time away from their family, Mildred writes a letter to Bobby Kennedy who passes it on to the ACLU, who takes up the case.
Richard is a white male Southerner, a construction worker who patiently and evenly lays bricks, loves his wife, their families, and friends, and wants to be left alone. He is protective of his privacy and balks at the publicity the case brings to them, but, although he briefly protests once in a while,, he wants his wife and kids to be happy. Quiet and unassuming Mildred is no more of a troublemaker than her husband, but, with the protective strength she gets from Richard is willing to fight - just a little - and talk to the media. Richard, from the strength and conviction he eventually learns from Mildred, allows his world to be shaken, just a bit.
The movie has some creepy moments, where you expect something dire to happen to them (as it might in another movie by some other director), but most of these come to no more than threats. It's not an action fest; it's a character study and a small history lesson. Very nice acting and directing, and not at all heavy handed,
Disobedience: Another quiet film, also moving, also nice. This one is set in the London ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, or some facsimile thereof. As usual when I know something about the community that is being portrayed on-screen, I had to grumble during a few scenes that just could not have happened the way they were shown; I'm guessing a few liberties were taken by the screenwriters when adapting the book.
Anyway ... photographer and secular (and apparently bisexual but primarily lesbian) Ronit (Rachel Weisz) returns after years of estrangement from her community for her father the Rav's funeral, after someone has the courtesy to let her know. She finds her not-too-happy to see her cousin Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), the Rav's most prominent student and essentially adopted child is now married to her friend Esti (Rachel McAdams). Esti was Ronit's "more than friend" when they were younger, which is how Ronit came to leave/be banished from the community. Ronit is surprised to find her married to a man, let a lone to Dovid. Is she really happy with him?
Like every other Hollywood film that has Jews in it, this is a "Shylock" film, which means it can't end without one or more of the Jews abandoning their faith, in total or in part, which is what makes for the "happy" part of the ending (a happy ending for a film with Christians in it is for them to resist the temptation and cling to their faith, unless the film is about an abusive authority figure). So I will spoil the movie a little and say, of course Esti and Ronit have a go around, and, even though there is no actual nudity when they do, the scene is hot as hell. This is in contrast to the lovemaking scene that Dovid and Esti share earlier in the film that, despite a little nudity, is incredibly not.
All the characters are played beautifully. Rachel is convincing as Ronit, Rachel shines as Esti (once in a while she doesn't quite sell herself as a woman who has been religious all of her life), and Alessandro does a fine job as Dovid, a job which the director/screenwriter nearly destroys at the end of the film. Bleah. Not a great amount happens in the movie other than in the interior world's of the characters, which is fine. The ending has a number of missteps which was a letdown, because it was quite lovely until then. It's not a terrible ending, just a fumble to squeeze in a few cliche scenes that I think the director thought we wanted to see, rather than the more natural scenes and conclusions that would have made a more satisfying experience. Still a beautifully shot, beautifully acted, nice little film.
Every Day: Another happy surprise, this was better than I was led to believe. It's the story about a ... something named "A" that wakes up every day in a different body. For plot's sake, one day A decides to spend the day with and fall in love with a girl named Rhiannon (Angourie Rice, who looks like the girl who finally gets to kill the serial killer in a horror movie). After a number of other run ins over the next few days (in other bodies, of course), A finally reveals itself to Rhiannon. Cue the skeptical, the attempt at a relationship, the obvious difficulties, and the final decision.
The movie doesn't explain how this is happening, which is fine, and it covers some of the questions and many of the difficulties that A and Rhiannon would face in this situation. Like any good science fiction film, the central element reflects and in reflected by other aspects of what it means to "change", to be constant, to be gender-fluid, to not know where and who someone is, to plan for an uncertain future, and to be yourself. This is reflected in Rhiannon's relationship with her family, her friends, her boyfriend, with A and with and herself.
This movie is little like The Time Traveler's Wife - it's not as good as that movie was, but it's solid, well acted, well plotted, and generally works. It's not a gripping movie: neither A nor Rhiannon are very engaging people; they're both pretty average, if polite and well-meaning. Some parts of A's past are unexplained and leave me wondering: was this body swapping happening while A was in the womb? If not, then who replaced A's original body when A swapped out for the very first time (since A never goes back to the same body)? But more important is the question about the fate of one of the main characters at the end. But I can let that go.

Lipstick And The Crucifix
They say that you shouldn't judge a book by the cover, and I try not to, but the cover is still a lot. The paperback cover of Grady Hendrix's horror novel, My Best Friend's Exorcism, took hold of my eyes and refused to let go. A throwback to the Drew Struzan movie posters and pulp horror book covers of the 80's. The tease of a teenage 80's nostalgia trip with a "Satanic Panic" edge excited me like few other things do. So in I went, headfirst, not knowing what horrors awaited me, and boy, what glorious horrors they were. As one character in the book, Father Morgan, says, "You can't judge a book by its cover, but the cover does give you a pretty good indication of what's inside" (183).
The pulse of nostalgia for 80's pop culture can be felt through every page, but it's dealt with far more grace than Ernest Cline's Ready Player One. For starters, Ready Player One felt like a Buzzfeed listicle for Big Bang Theory fans in prose form. Indeed, the over-stuffing of pop culture references came off as shallow, bloated, and narcissistic. Not so here. My Best Friend's Exorcist isn't interested in overloading your senses with every film, show, and video game known to man. It instead takes the Stranger Things route in setting its focus on a few popular items and giving them a sentimental connection to the characters.
This is set up early on with Steven Spielberg's ET, which is the theme of Abby's childhood birthday party at the skating ring. No one in her class shows up because they'd rather go to Margaret's party with horseback riding. The only kid to come over is the sheltered Gretchen, clearly pushed into it by her parents. Gretchen knows nothing about ET, thinking it stands for "extra terrible" and has never used roller skates. Abby introduces her to the ways of the world, often to the annoyance of Gretchen's religiously conservative parents. One such incident occurs when the two are caught singing to Madonna's "Like A Virgin", dressed with "dozens of crosses around their necks" and "painting their lips bright coral" (35). Gretchen's parents go into such a fury that their friendship breaks, but being children, they inevitably reconcile. They have other friends, though, like the rich popular girl Margaret, and the quiet but intelligent one Glee. Many of the school parts read to me like a raunchier version of Tales From A Fourth Grade Nothing. It's filled with all the warm messages young people need to hear, but doesn't shy away from how disgusting life can get. It's John Hughes by way of Chuck Palahniuk. There's an episode when a student loses their retainer in the garbage and Gretchen and Abby go rifling through many garbage bags, in minute detail, to retrieve it. Heartfelt, but nauseating.
Gretchen's demonic possession seems to come out of nowhere. All we know is that Gretchen goes running naked through the woods after an acid trip, and comes out of an old cabin worse for wear. We hear rumors of a Satanic cult that supposedly chopped a girl up before. Abby may or may not have seen a man in the cabin window. It's suggested that Margaret's playboy boyfriend, Wallace Stoney, might have raped Gretchen, or that he father mistreated her a few too many times, but we never know for certain. By the end of the novel, the how and why of Gretchen's possession, aren't as important as the impact it leaves on everyone around her. There's a seminal moment in William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist, where the young Father Karras asks the older Father Merrick why Satan would chose to harass an innocent little girl. Merrick replies that by making a little girl the object of such disgust and revulsion, he makes believers question how God could still bear to love human beings. Thus throwing into doubt Christ's whole mission. Gretchen's ordeal is of a slightly different nature. She throws doubt into everyone's love for her. Many of the worst things in the novel occur to those around her.
When Gretchen writes fake love letters to Glee from Father Morgan, Glee confesses her mutual love to the befuddled priest. When he responds that he has no idea what she is talking about, she is driven to attempting suicide by leaping off the bell tower. Gretchen gets Margaret to take milkshakes with tapeworm eggs in effort lose weight. The result may be, by far, the most horrifying scene the novel. Margaret lies bed-ridden, looking more corpse than girl, when, "It slid over the root of Margaret's tongue, and then Margaret gave three explosive, throat-clearing coughs, each one pushing it out farther. It was sticky, gelatinous, and alive--a blind white worm, thick as a garden hose, and it was hauling itself out of Margaret's stomach with single-minded intent" (252). What happens here isn't even supernatural, but the fact that it's plausible makes it all the more skin-scrawling. It must needs be stressed that these and others acts have a secondary, reputational effect. Rumors spread quickly in their town, and even quicker in high school. Glee, Margaret, and especially Gretchen, won't be looked at by their classmates the same way again. Even if the demon is exorcised, the damage he leaves behind won't be so swiftly erased.
Hendrix indicts the whole town as complicit in spreading the demon's evil. This is on particular display with Gretchen's parents, who want to keep her locked away from all the world's temptations. Instead of trying to understand her, or the friend who knows her best, they blame drugs and sex for their daughter's corruption. The adults care about their reputations about as strongly as the teenagers do. Anything wrong with their children, anything damaging, is explained away, dismissed, or ignored. Father Morgan tells Abby the story when Jesus exorcised the Gadarene madman, and is expelled by the town for it. Some people need a boogeyman to put all their sins on, to avoid confronting their own, "The people in the village needed the Gadarene madman to be sick. That way they could project all their problems onto him. They blamed him for everything: too much rain, too little rain, their kids staying out past curfew, cows dying. As long as he was sick, they could point to someone who wasn't them and say, 'That's his fault. He's possessed by Satan.' And when Jesus cured him, they didn't know what to do. They were at a loss" (185). While Morgan says this to try and convince Abby that Gretchen isn't possessed, she seems to already grasp the town's underlying hypocrisy in how they treat Gretchen:
"Turning eighteen doesn't determine when you become an adult in Charleston; neither does registering to vote, graduating from high school, or getting your driver's license. In Charleston, the day you become an adult is the day you learn to ignore your neighbor's drunk driving and focus instead on whether he submitted a paint-color change proposal to the Board of Architectural Review. The day you become an adult is the day you learn that in Charleston, the worse something is, the less attention it recieves.
"At Albermarle, everyone was suddenly being very adult about Gretchen" (177-178).
The friendship between Gretchen and Abby is at the heart of this novel, and what a heart it has. The love that these two share is the purest form of philia, more intimate than that of many romances. This one aspect where My Best Friend's Exorcist surpasses William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. While that novel was certainly a thrilling struggle of one man's faith, the reader's sympathy for Reagan never reached anything personal. However, when we see Gretchen transform into a monster, when we watch her struggle and suffer, it breaks our hearts as much as it does Abby's. Gretchen is more than just an innocent little girl, she's our friend. Thus, the trial becomes more a challenge to Abby's faith in their friendship than her faith in a God. Brother Lemon tells Abby that, "An exorcism tests us. It asks, 'How strong is your faith? How deep is your belief?' The exorcist must be willing to lose everything---all dignity, all safety, all illusions---everything is burned away in the fire of the exorcism, and what's left is the core of who you are" (288). This is exactly what happens during the climax, but the resolution has a unique twist.
On her last legs, alone with the demon, Abby picks up Brother Lemon's holy book and begins recite the famous words, like, "The power of Christ compels you." We sort of expect things to go on as they did in Blatty and Friedkin's Exorcist, with God casting out Satan, but no such thing occurs because it would be insincere. Abby has not been especially religious throughout the book, so for her to suddenly come to Jesus now would ring false. So instead, she uses prays in the name of the things that meant the most to her, her memories: "By the mysteries and the power of Good Dog Max, and E.T. the Extra-terrible, and Geraldine Ferraro the first lady vice president ever, by the Eye of the Tiger, the Love Cry of the Koala Bear, by the passion and redemption of Bad Mama Jama, who will always have supper in the oven" (311). In any other book, using pop culture nostalgia to defeat the devil would come off as corny and cheap, but here, we are moved. Why? Because we were there with Abby when these memories were made. We know what Madonna, Phil Collins, and the Go-Gos mean to Abby and Gretchen. Those are the things that only they can share, and no demon can snatch those moments away.
By the end of the novel, many ups and downs occur over the course of Abby and Gretchen's lives, their friendship even ebbs and flows, but it never does it end. All they have is each other. It's all they've ever had, and it's all they've ever needed. Abby was the only one who stayed with Gretchen while she suffered possession. When Abby is on her deathbed, Gretchen is the only one sitting warmly beside her. Many hope for such friendship, but few are ever lucky enough to find it.

Tabula Rattata
You could say this all started back when I met Professor Oak in Pallet Town. My story doesn't start out much different from the stories of many other young aspiring Pokémon enthusiasts. The idea to build a Pokémon preserve and sanctuary came to me much earlier, of course, but I didn't start working on it in earnest until after a very long discussion with the original Pokémon Professor. His research on the natural relationships between humans and Pokémon, particularly his work on shared habitats and habitats in close proximity, really inspired some of my early ideas of building a park that people and Pokémon could both enjoy.
I had wanted to meet Professor Oak in person for quite some time, but travel to the Kanto region was quite expensive for me as a teenager. I was seventeen when I first read some of Professor Oak's articles in current Pokémon journals. I learned that the professor was working on a revolutionary new device that was capable of recording and studying Pokémon both in the wild and in captivity. We know this device today as the Pokédex, and back then it really ignited my budding desire to capture, catalog and build an environment in which Pokémon could thrive and people could come study or otherwise spend time with them. The Pokédex is exactly what I felt I needed to set things into motion and so I began corresponding with Professor Oak several months before we actually met in person.
Through our correspondence, the professor was more than happy to keep me up to date on his progress with the Pokédex. When it was finally ready for field testing he sent me a personal invitation to Kanto. The idea was to form a mutually beneficial relationship where I helped him test the Pokédex while he and the Pokédex itself would help me begin my arduous task that lay ahead. I spent almost all I had saved to get myself to Kanto, but it was completely worth it looking back. The Pokédex proved to be invaluable to my task, and Professor Oak himself was an amazing mentor.
The day I arrived in Pallet Town, Professor Oak and I spoke about Pokémon passionately for several hours. I understood the fundamentals of catching and battling Pokémon, of course, but the professor was shocked to know that I'd never caught or trained a Pokémon myself. During the course of our talk, he convinced me that in order to build my Pokémon Sanctuary, I would need to know all I could about Pokémon and that there was no less certain way than to begin my journey as a Pokémon Trainer. He entrusted me with one of his earliest versions of the Pokédex which was rudimentary compared to what we see nowadays, but still unbelievably advanced at the time. Then he took me out to a field just beyond the boundaries of Pallet Town where we waited patiently for an opportunity to catch my first Pokémon.
While we were sitting out in that field, Professor Oak told me that he had recently given away his last remaining Pokémon, so we would have to wait for a Pokémon significantly weakened and unable to resist capture. He also told me that if I were successful at field testing his Pokédex in Kanto, he would make sure to acquire the three beginner Pokémon that he'd recently given away to young Kanto trainers from Pallet Town. The Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur native to Kanto were extremely rare and Professor Oak was one of the few ways to get ahold of such unique Pokémon. It was a rare opportunity for me to get some exclusive Pokémon into my Sanctuary when I was able to open it. Sitting there in the tall grass with Professor Oak, I knew that this was one of those important moments in my life where everything was about to change forever. I took a great risk coming to Pallet Town with my life's savings, but I would eventually leave with my first Pokémon companion and the very tool I would need to catch, catalog, study and care for every new Pokémon I could find. It felt amazing.
Now, catching that first Pokémon was not at all what I was expecting. It's safe to say that my first Pokémon was quite possibly the most feeble and sickly Rattata within three miles. We saw many healthy Pidgey and Rattata soaring through the air or scurrying through the grasses, but the professor assured me that we'd only be wasting our Pokéballs on them unless they were weakened. It was a daunting test of patience, but finally the most pathetic Rattata the world has ever known crossed our paths and was easily captured. He was scrawny and weak, but he was mine and I really did adore that little fellow. I named him Rascal and we were instant friends. Once I was armed with my own captured Pokémon and a Pokédex, Professor Oak and I parted ways. He told me to head north towards Viridian City - a bit of a sleepy hamlet compared to the cities I was used to back home. Along the way I could train Rascal and I would be able to find a gym in Viridian where I could continue the training.
Some of my toughest challenges as a trainer were those first few days with Rascal. He was honestly much too weak to face a full strength Pidgey or Rattata, so again we had to choose our battles carefully. I made sure he was well fed, rested and groomed, but actually getting battle experience and building up his strength was a tedious job. Although your first Pokémon is intended to keep you safe from wild Pokémon that have a tendency to be territorial, Rascal couldn't really protect me from much of anything on that initial trip up to Viridian City. We made our way very slowly and carefully avoiding unwanted attention. I took the time, hiding in the long grass, to sketch Rascal and wild Pokémon alike, but we did everything in our power to avoid unnecessary battles. They could have been a disastrous and premature end to my Pokémon journey.
Rascal and I did come stumbling into Viridian City sometime after dark that day, if I recall. I was broke having spent everything I had just getting to the Kanto region, but what little I did have I spent on Pokéballs and some lodging there in the city. I spent at least a week in Viridian City. Part of the reason was waiting for the Pokémon gym to reopen after a mysterious closure some time before we arrived, but part of me was also taking the time to slowly build up Rascal's strength and endurance. Alongside Rascal, I carefully studied the Rattata and Pidgey found along Route 1 which connected the city to Pallet Town. At first, Rascal could only confront other Rattata that we found alone and vulnerable, but slowly - painfully slowly - he built up enough strength to defend against healthy Rattata and Pidgey as well. It was a harrowing week of hiding and running from the strong, and building up Rascal's ability and confidence on the weak, but we managed to persevere.

Thank You KHEF!
this school year! I was able to purchase a new parachute which is large enough to accomodate all of my students. This parachute has all the colors of the rainbow, which ties into my management plan of organizing my class by colors. My older parachute only accomodated smaller children and a class of 20 students. There was enough money to purchase a rainbow set of beach balls and jump ropes as well!
Parachute games are a great workout, and also teach teamwork and cooperation. This parachute will be enjoyed by thousands of students for years and years to come!
Check out the pictures and videos below to see how much fun the students had playing!
We're MOVING!

The new site is rough, but I'll get it running to tip top shape in no time. I hope everyone makes the transition smoothly.
I have a lot of cool ideas for the new site that I don't think are possible using Blogger.
Thanks Blogger. Thanks Google.
I intend to leave this site up unless there's a really good reason to take it down.
